History
It's that
time of year again! This year Super Bowl XXXVI (XXXVI
= 36) will be played on Sunday, February 3rd, at
six o'clock. The game usually falls during the last week
of January, but it was pushed back because of the recent terrorist
attacks this past year. The first football championship
game ever played was not called the Super Bowl. It was,
in fact, called the 1st World Championship Game,
and it was between the American Football League and the National
Football League. It wasn't until the 4th
World Championship Game that the name Super Bowl was printed
on the tickets. After that, it remained simply, The
Super Bowl.
The 1st
World Championship Game was played at the Los
Angeles Memorial Coliseum in California on January 15th,
1967. There were 61,946 people in attendance, and the
final score was Green Bay Packers - 35, Kansas City Chiefs -10.
The Packers collected $15,000 per man and the Chiefs collected
$7,500 per man. This past year, Super Bowl XXXV was played
at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on January 28th,
2001. There were 71,921 people in attendance, and the
final score was the Baltimore Ravens - 34, New York Giants -
7. The salary of players today can reach into the millions.
To Win
The teams
that have the most Super Bowl wins to their credit are the San
Francisco 49ers and the Dallas
Cowboys. Each has five victories. Teams like
the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills have been to the
Super Bowl four times and lost every time.
The team
that wins the Super Bowl each year is awarded the Vince Lombardi
Trophy worth $12,000, made by Tiffany & Co., New York.
The team also receives 150 championship rings worth $5,000 each.
Last year's game was watched by 131,200,000 people and was the
5th most watched program in television history.
This Year
Today, we
have parties with friends on the day of the big game, and even
commercials have become a part of the celebration. Last
year, it cost about 2 million dollars for a 30 second commercial
during the game. A famous entertainer usually sings The
National Anthem and this year it will be Mariah Carey.
The half time show is always interesting, and since U2 will
be performing this year, we should expect no less. Although
it only comes around once a year, the impact the Super Bowl
Championship game has upon American society is significant.
