The True Meaning of Christmas

During all the hurry and rush of the holidays, as we run from one place to another to get the best deals on the hottest items, have we forgotten the true meaning of Christmas?

Christmas is a religious holiday, despite an attempt by the ACLU and other organizations to remove Christ from the celebrations. It seems there is a very loud, very small faction in the U.S. that is attempting to build such a high wall between Church and State that citizens of the United States will no longer have freedom OF religion.

Our founding fathers must be rolling over in their graves! They came to the U.S. in large part for religious freedom. The countries they came from restricted their right to celebrate their faith, and they fought to give the broadest possible protection to everyone's faith. What has become of it now?

This year perhaps everyone can stop for a few moments to remember that Christmas is a celebration of a person who changed the world we live in today. Whether you celebrate the story of Christ's birth as a religious figure or a historical one, let's keep in mind his most important lesson: reach out and do something to show your love for your fellow man.

Questions to Ponder

  • What is the history of Christmas?

  • Why have so many Christmas displays come under fire by the ACLU and other organizations?

  • Is Christmas a secular holiday to a growing number of Americans?

  • Why can't a religious AND secular celebration of Christmas co-exist peacefully, allowing Christians and people of other faiths to celebrate a time of peace together once a year?

  • Where did the story of Santa Claus originate?

  • Why is Christmas sometimes abbreviated Xmas?
