Each year we take one day to remember all of those who have died in the defense of our country and our freedoms. Since the beginning of the Iraq War there have been 3,562 coalition deaths -- 3,298 Americans, two Australians, 140 Britons, 13 Bulgarians, six Danes, two Dutch, two Estonians, one Fijian, one Hungarian, 32 Italians, one Kazakh, three Latvian, 19 Poles, two Romanians, five Salvadoran, four Slovaks, 11 Spaniards, two Thai and 18 Ukrainians, according to an April 13, 2007 report by CNN. Many US politicians are now calling for the withdrawal of troops by this time next year. However, more than 24,600 troops have been injured in the fighting as well.

Questions to Ponder

  • How many more lives will be lost before the war is over?

  • Do you feel the US troops should be removed within a year, or do you feel the troops should stay to do more in Iraq?

  • Do you think that this was a "win-able war"?

  • How does your community celebrate Memorial Day?
