This particular page is devoted to Dmitri Shostakovich. He was born in St. Petersburg on September 25, 1906. He died in Moscow on August 9, 1975. Shostakovich began studying with his mother who was a professional pianist. His graduation piece, Symphony No.1, brought him international fame at an early age. Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No.1; Haydn: Piano Trio No.16

Mstislav Rostropovich is one of the world's greatest cellists. Shostakovich dedicated his 'Cello Concerto No 1' to Rostropovich, who gave the UK premiere in 1960. This concert is released for the first time anywhere as part of BBC's Legends.




Shostakovich. Symphony No.8 / Mravinsky

This live performance of Shostakovich's 'Symphony No. 8' marks its UK premiere in 1960, when Mravinsky was at the height of his conducting powers. Shostakovich composed the mighty, five-movement symphony in 1943 to depict WW II's horrors and atrocities.
