Praying Mantids Babies
By Cynthia Kirkeby with Photos by Melissa Papke
Jul 27, 2006, 07:35 PST

Melissa from ClassBrain has been raising praying mantids in her yard and we thought this was a great project to share. She has taken some great photos that show you what the praying mantid is like as it grows up.

You can see how tiny they were when Melissa and Brian first found them.

June 6, 2006 © Melissa Papke 2006 - This itsy bitsy praying mantid was the first one spotted.

June 6, 2006 © Melissa Papke 2006 - Then its brother joined him on the branch.

June 10, 2006 © Melissa Papke 2006 - This tiny praying mantid was spotted a few days later, and the photo gives you a good idea of how tiny they are.

June 23, 2006 © Melissa Papke 2006 For a few days it was hard to find them, but the praying mantids had actually grown quite a bit.

June 24, 2006 © Melissa Papke 2006 Melissa's macro lens was close enough that this praying mantid turned to look at her, as if to say, "What are you doing?"

July 7, 2006 © Melissa Papke 2006 - A week or so later, the praying mantids are getting bigger. Although... that term is relative, when you see how tiny they still are.
