Although President Bush has been warned by scientist around the world since 2001 and earlier, the administrations seems to be bound and determined to be part of the problem instead of part of the solution. However on April 3, 2007, in a 5-4 decision the US Supreme Court has decided to reject the EPA's assertion that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant and therefore cannot be regulated under the Clean Air Act.

While other governments are trying to take steps to lessen the ecological damage that has occurred, the Bush administration has tried to reverse much of the progress made by previous administrations. For the first time in many years the US Supreme Court has stepped in and said it is our responsibility to protect the environment.

Questions to Ponder

  • Do you agree with the majority or minority decision in this US Supreme Court case?

  • Is the damage to our environment from greenhouse gases reversible or fatal?

  • What needs to be done in the US to reverse the damage we're seeing at a global level?

  • What do you think of the Bush administration's policies in light of the information disseminated in Al Gore's documentary, An Inconvenient Truth?

  • How can the average person help reduce global warming?

  • What can be done at the city or county level to reduce greenhouse gases?
