Sigmund Freud
May 9th is the anniversary of Sigmund Freud's birth. He is commonly referred to as "the father of psychology" and his concepts of the id, ego, and superego forever changed the way we look at ourselves. Freud also believed that dreams could give us great insight into ourselves, if we could decipher the language of the dream world particular to us. Although he started out as a neurologist, Freud's switch to psychology influenced generations to come.
Questions to Ponder
- Do you think that dreams can actually hold the key to our subconscious?
- Should hypnosis be used as a therapeutic technique or does the possibility for patient abuse cloud its significance?
- Do you think, as Freud did, that verbal or "Freudian slips come from repressed desires, or do you think they are simply a verbal error without deeper meaning?
- Do you think Freud or Jung was more correct in his assessment of human nature?
