Chinese Baby Milk Formula Contaminated with Melamine
Less than a year after thousands of pets in the US were sickened and in some cases died from Chinese pet food that was contaminated by the addition of melamine, thousands of babies are now suffering the same fate in China and other asian countries from similarly tainted baby milk formula in China.
In the case of the pet food last year, according to VIN, "There is suspicion that melamine was added to wheat gluten (and potentially other ingredients) to artificially increase the nitrogen content of the ingredients, which would be interpreted as an increased protein content." This increase in protein would then allow the product to command a higher price in the import/export market.
Questions to Ponder
- Should all food products imported from China be routinely screened for melamine?
- What sort of penalty should be imposed on Chinese exporters guilty of tainting food products with melamine?
- Should sanctions be imposed on China for their recent string of poisonous exports?
- Would the Eat Local campaign that has been encouraged as a way of reducing the cost of food products also be a good way to guard against tainted imports?
