Who would have thought that children playing on a merry-go-round would be an integral part of bringing clean water to underdeveloped communities? Apparently PlayPump did, and they have created an effective water pump on that very premise.

"Each year, more than 2.2 million people in developing countries die from preventable diseases associated with lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene."

If you're looking for a way to have a positive effect on something in our world, this may be an interesting project to explore. Clean water is one of the primary needs yet unmet in many communities around the world. By participating in the PlayPump fundraising efforts, you will be helping to bring a clean water system to needy African communities.

How does the PlayPump system work?

Children playing on the merry-go-round actually power the community water pump, enabling the system to generate as much as 1400 liters of water per hour.

We think this is an innovative approach to a substantial need. Over 1.7 million children under the age of five will die from diarrhea this year. Hopefully this number will decrease as more of these systems are put into effect.
