Social Studies LPs National Geographic has a wonderful selection of lesson plans and activities involving social studies and related subjects, including: geography, history, science (topics such as biodiversity), and archeology.

The lesson plans include topics such as: The Land of The Inca, Latitude Longitude, and Mapmaking, Through the Eyes of A Refugee, and the Beautiful Blue Nile. This is an excellent resource that you shouldn’t miss.

Choose a lesson plan based on the topic, grade level, or the national standard it addresses. Here are shortcut links by grade:

Grades K-2
Grades 3-5
Grades 6-8
Grades 9-12

Choose an activity based on its related lesson plan, or the standard it addresses.
Be sure to poke around through the Xtras and Interactive Features found in the left navigation panel. There are some wonderful resources there, but they are not always obvious at a first glance.

Print A Map
The other resource that you will really want to use in your class, especially if you are a geography or history teacher, is the Xpeditions Atlas. The maps in this atlas can be printed out with or without country borders and with or without “details” such as city names. You can also access the map as a GIF or as a PDF file. The PDFs are set up for an 8-1/2 x 11 page format.
