The following websites explore their lives, their presidencies, and their decisions that shaped our nation and our world.


Biographies

1. POTUS - Presidents of the United States is a treasure trove of information on the presidents of the United States. This in depth site covers election results, cabinet members, notable events during the presidencies, Internet biographies, historical documents, other Internet resources, and points of interest (this last section would be more aptly named presidential trivia). This is the most complete site available on US Presidents.

2. The Presidents of the United States contains concise biographies of past and current presidents. This White House collection has all of the basics on each of our Presidents. You can look up the biographies by name or by date.

3. By Popular Demand: Portraits of the Presidents and First Ladies features formal and informal portraits of Presidents and their wives all the way back to George and Martha Washington.

Presidential Speeches & Records

3. Presidential Speeches Archive is an excellent collection of speeches made by each of our presidents, all the way back to George Washington. Some of the types of speeches included in this archive are inaugural addresses, annual messages to Congress, State of the Union addresses, farewell addresses, and war messages.

4. David Leip’s Atlas of Presidential Elections gives a rare glimpse into the mind of the public during presidential elections. This is the only site that we know of that allows you to review detailed results from each presidential election, all the way back to George Washington! This is an excellent and unusual reference site.

5. Presidential Inaugurations presents not only the transcriptions of the inaugural addresses, but also many documents that are associated with each of these presidential events. However, one of the most intriguing parts of this site is the section on Special Presentations. Here, you will find Historical Insights with Marvin Krantz’ RealPlayer video lectures on nine select Presidential inaugurations, as well as, Presidential oaths, and the bible and scripture passages used at the inauguration, to name a few of these special presentations.

6. Codification of Presidential Proclamations and Executive Orders is a unique presentation of executive decisions by topic from 1945 through 1989. The one oddity of this collection is the omission of the president’s name associated with each of the proclamations and executive orders.

7. Executive Orders Disposition Tables presents the executive orders from 1937 to the present, covering the presidential terms from Herbert Hoover to today’s President. Unlike the previous listing, this archive is organized by President’s name.

10. Salaries and Retirement Benefits of U.S. Presidents and other Federal Government Employees allows you to Presidential and Vice-Presidential salaries from 1789 to the present. Compare George Washington’s salary and benefits with Clinton’s. Things have changed!
