Port of Long Beach Economics Lesson Plan - click to download
The Port of Long Beach in California has put together an excellent lesson plan that aligns with the 12th grade requirements for economics. The program explores "how young people in California, Japan and Mexico are linked by international products, such as American-designed Skechers shoes, Japanese-made Toyota Prius automobiles and American-made Taylor guitars. The program illustrates how international trade connects young people throughout the world."

What we particularly like about this lesson plan is that it is built around products and circumstances that kids can relate to in their day to day lives. One of the calculations in the lesson plan takes a look at whether or not someone should attend Graduate School to get their Masters by weighing the cost/benefit ratios. Other exercises focus on the Prius and Sketchers shoes, both popular items with today's teens.

The written lesson plan is augmented with an online video called Julio's New Ride which once again moves the lesson plan up a the scale towards a more accessible learning experience for the students.

We've attached a copy of the Economics lesson plan with the permission of the Port of Long Beach for you use in your class. You can access additional resources and the accompanying video on their website.
