Apr 6, 2008, 13:07 PST

By Kids For Kids (BKFK), the youth empowerment company, today announced the launch of four concurrent youth innovation Competitions: The Advertise Your Cause Media Challenge, The Akitas to Zebras (A2Z) Animal Challenge, The CosmoGIRL! Mind Your Own Business Challenge, and The Design Squad Trash To Treasure Competition.

Special teacher guides, and student “Brainsheets” have been created to correspond to each of the new BKFK youth creativity challenges. The education materials, which complement the BKFK “Inventive Thinking” program, are free of charge. Also, new learning activities are posted regularly. Download the education materials here:

The four competitions mark the second round of challenges taking center stage on the company’s youth social entrepreneurship creativity portal, www.bkfk.com, powered by the flagship “Idea Locker™.” Grand prize winners will take away $10,000 per competition as well as a “connection to reality” - a unique real-world experience provided by industry insiders- a prize that money can’t buy.

  1. The Advertise Your Cause Media Challenge, in partnership with DoSomething.org, challenges young people to discover what causes matter most to them and then “Do Something” to propel their cause into the public eye. The competition will reward the cleverest, most powerful and most impactful new PSA campaign idea. In addition to their $10,000 Grand Prize, the winner will also receive national media exposure for their PSA.

  2. The Akitas to Zebras (A2Z) Animal Challenge, in partnership with The Weather Channel, asks young people to envision new solutions which protect the welfare of all animals, including endangered species. In addition to the $10,000 Grand Prize, winner will also receive a ‘Dream to Reality Prize Package/Trip'; which consists of: A 2-day/1-night trip for two (entrant & parent/legal guardian) to Washington D.C. to visit an animal/wildlife agency.

  3. The CosmoGIRL! Mind Your Own Business Challenge will discover America’s hottest new entrepreneurial concept created by a girl. The Grand Prize winner will receive $10,000 in seed money from BKFK to get her idea off the ground. She’ll also get media attention and entrepreneurial support along her path to success. Piczo.com is the Presenting Sponsor of the CG! MYOB Challenge, and The BizWorld Foundation and The University of Maryland, Baltimore County are educational partners of this competition.

  4. The Design Squad Trash To Treasure Competition, in partnership with the popular PBS engineering and design show “Design Squad” and sponsored by the Intel Foundation, challenges young people to create something wonderfully new out of everyday discarded items. The Competition falls into three categories: 1.) Move things or people (mobility) 2.) Protect the Environment (Eco) and 3.) Create something that young people can play with inside the home or outside (Play.) In addition to $10,000, the Grand Prize winner will also have the opportunity to build a prototype of his or her Trash to Treasure design at Continuum, an award-winning international design and innovation consultancy.

The Competition period runs from April 1, 2008 to June 30, 2008. All entries must be submitted no later at 12:00pm Noon ET on June 30, 2008 - online via the BKFK website at www.bkfk.com. All youth residing in the United States of America are eligible to participate, except for the CosmoGirl! MYOB Challenge, which is only open to girls. See website for the official rules.
