| From ClassBrain.com IL Tourism Briley is a ten year old Hometown Reporter from A-C Central Elementary in Ashland, IL who reported on the Chandlerville Burgoo. Chandlerville Burgoo Chandlerville, Illinois Elmwood Park, Main Street Dates: 4th Saturday of August Hours of Operation: 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Burgoo is a special event to celebrate my town’s birthday every year. The festival begins on Thursday and Friday, but the main activity is on Saturday. At Burgoo many people bring their stands to sell things, and there are a few games. On Thursday, Burgoo starts at 6 p.m. with the carnival and the Little Miss Burgoo and Mr. Burgoo contest. The contest is for boys and girls ages 4 – 6. Judges pick one boy and girl to be Little Mr. and Miss Burgoo. At 6:30 p.m., the baby contest starts. This is a contest for babies 3 months of age to 3 years old. The judges pick a baby they think is best for a certain category. After that there are the door prizes for kids and adults. The rides, mostly swings, slides and a few kiddie rides, last until 10 p.m. On Friday, the carnival starts at 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. a talent contest is held for everyone, ages 3 – adults. The prizes are $100 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd place, and $50 for 3rd place. This year, my friend and I were in the talent contest and we won 3rd place for our age division. After the talent contest there is music in the park. Most of the music isn’t famous people, but most of the time they are really good. Everything ends at 9 p.m. On Saturday, the parade starts at 10 a.m. The parade features many organizations, floats, and school bands. Horses are one of the few animals in the parade. After the parade, Burgoo officially opens with a flag-raising ceremony. Many acts come, and it is very crowded.
The acts this year were Black Diamond and Cadillac Ranch. During the day, many door prizes are drawn. The carnival rides go on all day. Burgoo is a very special day, and I enjoy it very much. Special Information: Be sure to get to the parade route on Main Street early so that you can get a good seat and sit on the east side of the street so you aren’t in the hot sun. © Copyright 2004 by ClassBrain.com |
