Ohio has had a challenging time with their state motto through the years, and it doesnt look as though things have gotten any better in the 21st century. The first motto they approved in 1866 was considered too pretentious: "Imperium in Imperio," Latin for "An Empire Within an Empire."
Their current motto, With God, all things are possible, was approved in 1959. It probably would have been able to stay under the radar of the ACLU if Ohio Governor, George V. Voinovich, havent tried to inscribe it on a building. thats apparently when the ACLU decided to make an issue of it.
Supposedly, this slogan is against the law, because its a direct quote from the bible, whereas most other slogans that reference God, do so in a more generic way.
