Annual Mesa Verde Country® Indian Arts and Culture Festival
By Cynthia Kirkeby
Apr 19, 2007, 23:37 PST

Each year the Mesa Verde Country® Indian Arts and Culture Festival celebrates the archaeology and Native American culture of the Southwest. Festival highlights include a world-class juried Indian Art Market, Indian Dances, Navajo rug auction, special archaeological tours and exhibits.

Jeanette Katoney is the 2007 featured artist. She is of Navajo decent. The themes of her paintings frequently deal with the relationship between ancient and modern times. She works in bold colors and mixed media, including oil paints, pastels, and prismacolor pencils. Her painting entitled "Cloud, Rainbow and Corn" is the special raffle award this year.

"The cloud, rainbow and corn are symbols that represent the relationship of the cloud's light, the rainbow's protection and strength, and the corn's fertility and life. With a prayer, the corn pollen brings together these elements for blessings."

Other events of interest include:
  • Anasazi Hertiage Center exhibit: "Archaeology Grows Up: 1906-2006." This special exhibit, commemorating 100 years of Archaeology, reveals the transformation of archaeology from the era of the 1906 Antiquities Act to the modern computer-assisted study of ancient people.
  • An evening Native American Dances and Cultural Performances beginning at 7:30 PM at the Center, presented by The Cortez Cultural Center. Special Native American dance performances will also take place on Saturday and Sunday in Mesa Verde National Park at 10:00, 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 in the Chapin Mesa Amphitheater.
