Tools for Living - Children With Health Care Needs

Every once in a while we run across a set of resources that we believe are important and should be shared. This group of additional learning links for children with health care needs supplies important and useful information for parents and teachers.

The CICC Discovery Tool
This questionnaire has been developed by the Center for the Improvement of Child Caring (CICC) to help parents discover if their child has special needs. This step-by-step assessment called the Discovery Tool is not a replacement for a professional evaluation, however, it will give you some insight into whether or not your child is doing what most children are doing at the same age. Learn what a special need is and how it is defined. This is important so you will understand whether or not your children are eligible for treatment and education services that can improve the quality of their lives and the lives of other family members. The CICC always recommends ‘that you discuss with your child’s pediatrician and/or health care provider the results of the Discovery Tool and any concerns you might have about your child.’

The Family Village
The Family Village is a Global Community of Disability-Related Resources. It includes information, resources, and communication opportunities on the Internet for persons with disabilities, their families, and those who provide them with services and support. Stop by the library for general information or specific diagnoses and use the card catalog. Visit the school for government agencies and resources for parents, teachers, and kids too. Drop by the coffee shop for online connections, traditional matching programs, and personal web pages. These are just a few of the examples of the resources you’ll find here.
