Test Preparation

AP Test Tips

May 1, 2007, 10:38 PST

What are the keys to AP success? Sylvan Learning Center, North America's leading provider of in-center and live, online tutoring for children in grades pre-K-12 has created a list of test taking tips to help kids increase their scores.

  • Don't try to cram for the Advanced Placement Tests overnight. Proper preparation takes weeks, even months, of review.

  • If you don't know an answer to a question on the test, and you can't eliminate any bad answer choices, skip the question and only go back if time permits.

  • Trust yourself. Rely on your instincts.

  • Never leave an easy question blank. Easy questions on the AP test usually have easy answers.

  • Read, read, read. Read the questions and answers critically.

  • Eliminate answers. For each incorrect answer you eliminate, you increase the probability of guessing the answer correctly.

  • Save your time. Don't spend too much time on any single question on the AP Test. Make sure you have enough time to answer as many questions as possible, in order to rack up as many points as possible.

  • Focus on what the question is asking. If you don't completely understand the question, finding the correct answer is going to be tough.

  • Rushing only hurts you. Work through the AP test at a good pace and keep track of the time remaining for each section.

  • Enter the Advanced Placement exam with confidence. Take a test preparation course. If you know the instructions for each section before you begin the test, you won't have to waste time reading them during the exam.

  • If time permits, revisit the questions you didn't answer. Then, end each section by reviewing your answers.
