Food and Nutrition Information Center

There is no better way to prepare your child for going back to school than making sure they eat a healthy diet. The Food and Nutrition Information Center is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and since 1971, they have been collecting and distributing information regarding food and nutrition to the public. Explore the following five sections to get an idea of how to help your child start their school day off right!

Child Care Nutrition Resource System
In this section you will find recipes, resources, and important information on preparing nutritious meals and food safety. Day care providers who participate in the USDA’s Child and Adult Care Food Program and receive reimbursement for meals served will find this especially helpful.

Food Safety Information Center
Here you will be linked to three separate groups focused on providing you with the most up-to-date information on food safety. The Foodborne Illness Education Information Center offers Food Safety Education & Training Materials, Stories, Solutions, and Strategies. There is a Foodsafe Discussion Group, HACCP Training Materials, and Food Safety Links. The Food Safety Training and Education Alliance has resources for retail, food service, vending, institutions, and regulators on training materials, funding opportunities, rules and regulations. Finally, the Food Safety Research Information Office provides the food safety research community with program and planning documents, research reports, news, upcoming conferences, and more.

WIC Works Resource System
WIC (Women, Infants, & Children) Works provides nutrition service tools for health and nutrition professionals. At this site you will encounter WIC-Talk, a place where the community can ask questions and get advice, a Learning Center, Reports & Studies, WIC Topics from A-Z, and the WIC Sharing Center. The sharing center has an Educational Materials Database and State Developed Materials.

Healthy School Meals Resource System
Check out what’s new, pay a visit to the Resource Cafe, Training Center, and more. Explore topics from A-Z, get Recipes and Menus, access Industry Links, and stop by the Chef’s Connection. Be sure to check out the Feature of the Month as well.

Food Stamp Nutrition Connection
This is a resource system for Food Stamp Program nutrition education providers. It is developed by the National Agricultural Library’s Food and Nutrition Information Center and the University of Maryland in collaboration with the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service.
