Pirate Mom - Review
By Cynthia Kirkeby

Pirate Mom is a delightful little Step Into Reading book by Deborah Underwood and illustrated by Stephen Gilpin. The book recounts the tale Pete's Mom, who is hypnotized into thinking she is a pirate and mistakenly left that way.... at least for awhile.

I suppose many of us have played the pirate with our kids over the years. I surely have, and it was impossible not to smile at the thought of what would have happened if I were stuck like that for a day or two.

In a way, I have been like that for a day or two. My kids probably felt a bit like Pete at times, as I swooped into their classrooms in full noble gear to explain what it was like in England during the Renaissance period. Of course, every good Renaissance Faire has its contingent of pirates, but somehow I think they handled me easier in hoops than they would have in an eye patch and sword.

As the Amazing Marco turns "Pete's Mom" into "Pirate Mom" and leaves her stuck like that while he go to meet his wife in the delivery room, I could imagine myself reading this book with my son when he was young. Arrr! I would growl as my son would tell me about the parrot on Pirate Mom's shoulder.

This is a great little book for any kids that have a mom like me... a little warped and off-beat, but hopefully a lot of fun overall. They will feel right at home as they read the cute tale of Pirate Mom, and disappear into the world of reading.
