A Home For Dixie - Review
By Cynthia Kirkeby
Apr 15, 2008, 17:43 PST

15 year old Emma Jackson has had her first book, A Home For Dixie, published by Harper Collins, and for good reason. Emma has created a wonderful picture book that takes young readers on a learning journey that teaches them about animal shelters and the vital role they play in protecting animals that have been abandoned, neglected, or abused.

The story is amazingly well written, especially when you consider the author is only fifteen years old. A Home For Dixie is engaging, well paced and absolutely adorably illustrated with excellent photos of Emma and Dixie by Bob Carey. Although Bob normally specializes in conceptual and environmental portraiture, his work on this children’s picture book shines! You won’t be able to keep from going, “Awwww, that’s so cute!” as you look at the photos throughout the book. Bob has managed to enhance every endearing moment in Emma’s story.

If you and your kids are dog lovers, A Home For Dixie, will be a book that you want to read over and over. This is a perfect book to give as a Christmas or birthday present to a child who wants a new dog. The Humane Society does not recommend purchasing a new pet during the holidays. With A Home For Dixie, you can read the book with your children after the holidays to prepare them for their visit to your local shelter or humane society. Then, you can pick out the perfect pet when your home is relatively calm and relaxed, without the strain and confusion of the holidays. Everyone will weather the adoption process a little better with the help of this fun and informative children’s book.

In addition to the wonderful story that you'll get to read, you and your kids can feel good that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Aunt Mary's Doghouse, the animal shelter in Emma's story.
