Evolution for Dummies - Review
By Cynthia Kirkeby
May 10, 2008, 16:33 PST

If you are looking for a plain language text explaining evolution, then Evolution For Dummies may be just the book you are looking for. This book goes through advance concepts such as genetic drift and quantitative genetics and discusses all of it in plain, simple language that is easy to follow.

If any of you have read my other reviews, you may have come across my opinion of "Dummies" and "Idiots" guides. I don't like them, not because of their content, but because I think their names create the wrong input for our brains. If we think of ourselves as "dummies" we may adopt that mental image.

That being said, Evolution for Dummies is a clearly written, thorough text on a complicated and controversial scientific subject. I found the sections towards the back on antibiotics and the flu particularly interesting. Of course, I suppose it's inevitable that one of my favorite parts of the book was Ten Fascinating Fossil Finds. I've always been fascinated by fossils, and I own a very modest collection of them. I had a wonderful time reading about trilobites, the Tiktaalik Rosea, Stromatolites, and microfossils.

I can't think of a better book to read on the subject of evolution. This text doesn't get hung up in scientific jargon or become boring like so many scientific texts. It is easy to read, which is quite a compliment when it comes to most science books.
