Danger in the Narrows
Danger in the Narrows by Mike Graff, and Illustrated by Marjorie Leggitt, is the first book in a new series of adventure books by Fulcrum Books features adventures in National Parks. The books feature the Parkers, a family of four with a set of ten-year-old fraternal twins named Morgan and James, who love to go hiking and exploring.
This series has a lively style, with plenty to keep today’s reader occupied. Each member of the family agrees to keep a journal during their trips, so the story is interlaced with journal entries from each family member, giving you the ability to hear their thoughts, which they may or may not be sharing out loud. In addition, there are factoids throughout the book in gray that give you trail warnings, historical facts, and geological tidbits. Marjorie Leggitt’s skillful illustrations, add to the maps and photos from Bryce and Zion National Park in Danger in the Narrows, and even an ADD reader will find plenty to occupy their brain.
The story weaves the real dangers of the canyon parks of Bryce and Zion into the family’s explorations. Rainstorms with sudden flash flooding, is by far one of the most dangerous occurrences in these high walls canyon parks. The other extreme of unrelenting heat and lack of adequate water can be equally deadly, so hikers must always be prepared to either carry the amount of water they need, or have the gear to properly filter enough along the way.
Of course, the other danger of hiking in wilderness parks is the risk of being injured along the way, as Mr. Parker discovers when he slips and breaks his leg and shoulder. Emergency help can have a hard time reaching victims in out of the way spots and communication can be difficult in canyon areas. Hikers should always carry basic emergency supplies in their pack, even if they think they’re just doing a quick little hike before lunch.
I highly recommend the Adventures with the Parkers series of books for young readers. These fictional stories based on real life places and circumstances will be a nice change for kids used to choosing only from the historical or fanciful stories usually recommended to this reader’s age group.
