Long Beach School District Up a Second Time for Prestigious National Broad Prize

The Long Beach Unified School District is once again one of only five school districts in the country to have been chosen as a finalist for The Broad (pronounced "brohd") Prize. Amazingly they've managed to do it for a second time, making them the only school district to achieve that honor.

The Broad Foundation sponsors an annual competition among school districts to see which one has demonstrated "the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among ethnic groups and between high- and low- income students." What is that improvement worth? A half of a million dollars! That's right! The winning school district is given an award of $500,000 to pass along to its students in the form of scholarships. Being a finalist isn't too shabby either, since each of those districts will have $125,000 to pass along to their students as well.

The winning school district will be announced on Sept. 18 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The five finalists were chosen from over 100 schools that were eligible for the prize in 2007. We'll have to see if Long Beach School District pulls off the win, or whether another district beats them out for the main prize....
