San Antonio
Due to the location of the rugged Santa Lucia Mountains, which tumble down to the sea in central California, the overland route between San Diego and the second mission at Carmel turned inland the latter half of the journey. Thus Father Serra chose an oak-studded valley east of the mountains for the site of his third mission. Read more here.

Father Serra knew that this third mission's success was important to assure that his dream of a "chain" of missions be realized. Father Serra was so anxious to get this mission underway that he hung a bell from a large oak tree on their very first day there and vigorously rang it to attract "All the Gentiles" within earshot.

Founded 1771
It is a wonder that Father Serra was able to begin so many missions. He was lame in one leg and had difficulty walking. Yet he walked north from Carmel to the Santa Lucia Mountains. There he planned the site for Mission San Antonio de Padua.

Padua Mission
This is the third mission and was founded July 14, 1771 by Father Serra and was named for St. Anthony. Operations moved to the present site in 1773.
