The 13th Mission
The name of this mission tells a lot about it. Father Lasuen dedicated the site to "the Solitude of Most Holy Mary, Our Lady." It was a dry, windy plain that was very hot in the summer and freezing cold on winter nights. Click on this link to read the story.

Mission La Soledad
It is told that Portola and Father Crespi were camped in a valley between the Salinas River and the Santa Lucia Mountains. That night an Indian approached them and said a word that sounded like "soledad," which is Spanish for loneliness. Father Lasuen chose the spot for the thirteenth mission. Read more here.

Nuestra Senora de la Soledad
