Santa Clara History
As soon as the San Francisco mission was well established, it was the intention of the padres to found another mission in pretty meadowland a few miles south of San Francisco Bay.

The Eighth Mission
After a delay of several months, due to an uprising of the natives at Mission San Luis Obispo, the second mission ordered to hold the San Francisco Bay was founded in Santa Clara.

Mission Santa Clara de Asis
Mission Santa Clara was built in what Portola described as "the plain of Oaks" which today is known as the Santa Clara Valley. Shortly after the founding of the mission a pueblo began and the Spanish settlers called it El Pueblo de San José.

Mission of California
The eighth mission was founded on January 12, 1777, by Father Tomás de la Peña. It was named for St. Clare of Assisi, founder of the order of nuns called the Poor Clares.
