You've Lost That Holiday Feelin'

It was one of those clear and cold evenings where just trying to get from point A to point B was a challenge. Christmas shoppers with less than ten days left to conceive of, purchase, wrap, and deliver gifts, were zooming all over town trying to accomplish these last minute feats. I’d made plans with a friend of mine I hadn’t seen in quite some time to go get coffee at the local Starbucks in town. We’ve been friends since 7th grade, which was quite a big deal for me since I moved all over the states as a kid until finally settling down here in Orange County, CA. We arrived, gifts in hand, and stood in a relatively short line to get a couple of holiday cups of cheer.

After settling down in front of a roaring fire we noticed a large group of kids enter the store, average age of the group about thirteen. With raised eyebrows we watched as they lined up, produced little booklets, and proceeded to begin singing ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful.’ We were pleasantly surprised and remarked upon the fact that this was indeed a rarity and a treat in our locale. We’d never seen the like in all our years of living here. About halfway through their song one of the three teenage girls running the place that evening proceeded to turn up the volume of the store radio and drown out the voices of the singers. My friend and I sat stunned while the kids turned embarrassed faces towards the exit and shuffled out of the store.

As you’re going about these last few days before the holidays arrive trying to finish more than is humanly possible, please remember that your smallest action can make or break a fellow human’s spirit in the blink of an eye. I wish you could have seen the dejected looks on these kids faces so you could know just what it means to lose that holiday spirit.
