Grandparents Day

What is Grandparent's Day?

Marian McQuade, Founder She is currently 91 years old. Was 70 in this photo.
Grandparent's Day is celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. The celebration was created by Marian McQuade, when she was 61 years old. Why not celebrate grandparents along with parents on Mother's Day and Father's Day? Although it is wonderful to celebrate grandparents on those days as well, Grandparent's Day was specifically set aside to bring attention to the lonely elderly patients in nursing homes.

Grandparent's Day was recognized as an official national day of celebration by Jimmy Carter in 1978. 2008 is the 30th anniversary of the celebration of Grandparents Day.

Marian McQuade, who is now over 90 years old, hoped to convince grandchildren to connect with their grandparents more frequently. Grandparents have a wealth of knowledge and experience that is sometimes overlooked, and celebrating grandparents once a year was a way of highlighting their special talents and abilities.

Project Ideas for Celebrating Grandparent's Day

  1. Make a card for your grandparent(s) and bring or mail it to them
  2. Create an acronym poem for your grandparents focusing on things you like about them, or information about their lives. Spell GRANDPARENTS down a page with one letter per line. Then write a word or a sentence starting with each letter that represents your Grandparents.
  3. Interview one or more of your grandparents, and write an oral history. You'll be amazed at what you'll learn! I found out that my grandmother hated margarine, because butter was rationed during WWII so everyone ate margarine. However, the margarine was white and you had to mix in yellow dye to make it look like butter. Yuck! I eventually did a three generation oral history of my grandmother, my mom, and myself. It was one of the coolest projects I ever did for a class.
  4. Visit a local nursing home and do something to make their day a little more interesting: read a set of poems, bring some friends and play some music, or do a improvisation skit.
