George Washington was our very first president, and served in office from 1789-1797. He was nicknamed the "Father of Our Country." George was the only president to be elected unanimously and to be inaugurated in two cities (New York and Philadelphia). His vice president was John Adams, who later became our second president.
He was born on February 22nd, 1732, and married Martha Dandridge Custis, in 1759. Washington's home was Mt. Vernon, and he was the only president to never live in Washington D.C. George didn't have any of his own kids, but he gained two stepchildren when he married Martha. George died on December 14th, 1799 of laryngitis and was the only president to die in the 1700's.
You can still see his face every day on U.S. dollar bills. We also celebrate his birthday along with President Abraham Lincoln's on President's Day every year.
