Robert
E. Lee
1807-1870
Born on January 19th
and raised in Virginia, this mighty General of the Confederacy was ranked 2nd
in his graduating class of 1829 at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
After later serving as the superintendent of the same school, Lee took
command of the Army of Northern Virginia.
Robert E. Lee battled with
Ulysses S. Grant across the state of Virginia until close to starvation. Lee surrendered with his men on April 9th,
1865 at the Appomattox Courthouse. After the war, he served as president
of Washington College, now called Washington & Lee College, until he died.
