Father's Day was created around the same time as Mother's Day in the early 1900's.
Mrs. Sonora B. Dodd first proposed Father's Day in 1909. She wanted to designate a day to honor her father, William Smart, because he raised six children as a single parent and gained her utmost respect. She organized the first Father's Day celebration on June 19th, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.
The idea caught on around the nation and by 1924, even President Calvin Coolidge announced his support for the holiday. In 1966 President Lynden Johnson signed a proclamation stating that the third Sunday of each June would officially be Father's Day. But it wasn't until 1972 that President Richard Nixon finally designated Father's Day a national holiday. Today it is a holiday to honor not just paternal, but all influential father figures in our lives.
