Move Over Traffic Law Now In Effect
By Cynthia Kirkeby

There is a new traffic law on the books in 48 out of 50 states that is designed to help protect police while they are stopped on the side of the road. If you don't comply, the fines are high, but they are designed to help keep our police alive during traffic stops, so please take a look and pay attention!

This rule requiring you to move over a full lane away from the officer's location, or slow down to twenty miles under the speed limit, is the rule in all U.S. states except for Hawaii and Maryland. According to a national poll by Mason Dixon Polling & Research, sponsored by the National Safety Commission:
  • 71 percent of Americans have not heard of “Move Over” laws;
  • 86 percent support enacting “Move Over” laws in all 50 states; and
  • 90 percent believe traffic stops and roadside emergencies are dangerous for law enforcement and first responders.

So, pass on this information to your friends and family. You may save one of them a huge ticket, and more than that, you may save the life of a patrol officer in your area.
