Chuck Jones
1912-February 22, 2002
After a career of more
than 60 years, artist and animator Chuck Jones has passed away at the age of
89. Jones was born in Spokane,
Washington but grew up in Hollywood, California. He created more than 300 animated films and received three
Oscars as a director. In 1996 he
was awarded an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement and an honorary life
membership from the Directors Guild of America.
Chances are, Chuck Jones
has impacted your life in one way or another. Do you know who the Road Runner is? How about Wile E. Coyote, Marvin
Martian, Pepe le Pew, or Michigan J. Frog? The frog can now be seen in the Warner Brothes logo/brand
I.D. The others you have probably
seen in cartoons spanning decades.
Chuck Jones drew these characters and, in turn, gave them life. When he joined MGM Studios he wrote,
produced and directed the screenplay forDr. Seus How the Grinch Stole
Christmas He also helped animate
the new Tom & Jerry series.
Jone autobiography is
calledChuck Amuc and is now in its 5th printing since 1989. A couple years back he established the
Chuck Jones Foundation to recognize, support and inspire excellence in art and
the art of classic character animation.
He hoped to accomplish this through the use of scholarships, library
resources, touring exhibits, a lecture series, access to film, notes, and
drawings. Chuck Jones died of
congestive heart failure in Corona del Mar, California. His life breathed magic into those
cartoon characters we will watch for many years to come.
