How Do You Do the Math Problem
4 and 1/2 divided by 1 and 4/5?
Well, Math can be a difficult subject but with a lot of practice, you will become an expert!
Print this out so you can follow the steps easier. I have color coded the numbers so you can follow along.
Okay, 4 1/2 divided by 1 4/5 ... here goes!
First you take the bottom number of your first fraction which is 2, and multiply it by your whole number which is 4.
2 x 4 = 8
Then you take your answer which is 8, and add it to the top number of your fraction which is 1.
8 + 1 = 9
Then finally you take your answer which is 9 and put it back over the bottom number of your fraction which is 2.
Now you have 9/2 right?
Okay. Now you follow the same steps with the second part of your equation.
First you take the bottom number of your second fraction which is 5, and multiply it by your whole number which is 1.
5 x 1 = 5
Then you take your answer which is 5, and add it to the top number of your fraction which is 4.
5 + 4 = 9
Now you take your answer which is 9 and put it back over the bottom number of your fraction which is 5.
Now you have 9/5 right?
So the last part of the problem is to take the 9/2 from the first part of the problem and multiply it (yes multiply, not divide!) by the reciprocal of 9/5. So you now have the problem:
9/2 x 5/9 = ?
You know how to do that right? Just multiply across!!
The 9's cancel each other out, and you are left with 5/2 or 2 1/2!
