Computing Story Problems

What is the best way to teach an 11-year-old (4th grader) how to compute story problems? Please advise. Thank you.
SDR

Dear SDR:

Word problems can be challenging for kids, but it is just a matter of learning to break things down. Discovery Schools has a very good section that deals with word problems. You can find it at BBC site.

Each of these games are done as word problems, then the student is taken through them step-by-step to learn how to solve them. They are quite good! Your student should have fun while learning at the same time! The games deal with math problems up to the Algebra level.

Hopefully between these two sites, your student will start to get the hang of solving word problems.

Thank you for sending your question to Ask ClassBrain. Please feel free to contact us again and recommend us to your friends.

Sincerely,
Cynthia Kirkeby
