Actually it is not just near Indonesia that earthquake activity is high. There is an area called The Pacific Ring of Fire which is very active with earthquakes. The reason is that it's one of the most volcanically active areas in the world. "90% of the world's earthquakes and 81% of the world's largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire," according to Crystalinks. Part of the Ring of Fire borders Indonesia, but it also borders the Western United States!
