Where did the expression come from:
"If you believe that...than I have a bridge I can sell ya"
Thank you classbrain
There is a very interesting story behind this phrase. Apparently in the 1960's the London Bridge was sinking fast into the Thames River. It was 140 years old and couldn't hold up to the pressures of gravity any longer. This is where the joke began. The bridge went on sale to the public as an antique, as it was the famous "London Bridge." A man named Robert McCulloch from Lake Havasu, Arizona got together with a friend of his and they purchased the decrepit bridge for $2.4 million! It was the highest amount anyone had ever paid for an antique up until that point in time. Everyone thought this was the most ridiculous thing they had ever heard and a complete waste of money. Hence the phrase, "If you believe that, then I have a bridge I can sell you." But once the bricks were flown over to Arizona and the bridge reassembled, tourists flocked from all over, making the town quite rich! Now, the London Bridge in Arizona is one of America's biggest attractions. Go figure!
