Topic: The Koran

ClassBrain Visitor:

I have a question about southwest Asia, and I was hoping you could help me with it. Here it is... What is the Koran? Hopefully you can help me figure it out. Thank you.

ClassBrain Response:

The word Koran can also be spelled Qur’an. The Koran is a book of sacred writings. It is read by Muslims from the Islamic religion. Muslims believe it is revelations (communicating the ultimate truth) made to Muhammad by Allah through the angel Gabriel. In other words, the angel Gabriel told Muhammad the information in the Koran, and this information came directly from Allah. The Koran is Allah’s word written so everyone could understand what it means.

An important part of understanding the Koran’s meaning is understanding how it was written. For Muslims, the Arabic language in which the Koran was written, is the only language that really shows what the words truly mean. Any and all translations into different languages, for example English, is thought to be ‘just an interpretation.’ These translations are not considered the true word of Allah.

Another way to understand this is to think about an English word, for example cat. In German they say die Katze and in French they say la chat. All of the words mean cat, but the spelling is very different.

When the Koran was written, it was written in an Arabic language. When people try to change the language to English or something else, the words mean different things in the new language. That is why Muslims believe that the only true way to read the Koran is in the Arabic language in which it was originally written.

Hopefully the above information will help you to better understand what the Koran is all about. If you need even more information, check out the links below.
