Etiquette do's and don'ts excerpted from Japan Made Easy.
These little reminders will help you learn the best way to be polite while you're in Japan. Make sure that you read through them all and memorize them. You wouldn't want insult someone in your host family by mistake.
DO:
- Bow slightly when you're with someone your age.
- Bow lower when you're with someone older than you or in a position of power, such as a school principal or scout leader.
- Make a slurping sound when you drink soup or eat noodles.
- Give a gift when you visit someone's home in Japan.
- Wear long skirts (or pants) when visiting temples and shrines.
DON'T:
- Wear shoes or slippers on Tatami mats.
- Stick your chopsticks upright into your rice bowl.
- Point your feet at someone when you're sitting down.
- Open your mouth when you laugh. (Cover your mouth with your hand).
- Blow your nose in public.
