Think twice about buying counterfeir products on the streets of Italy. Huge fines are being levied against tourists who have been doing just that.
According to National Geographic Traveler, tourists have been fined as much as $12,000 US for buying fakes from street vendors. That fine was for buying a pair of knock-off sunglasses. She paid $12 for the glasses and then a reduced fine of $4050.00 US for coughing up the fine immediately. That sort of fine could kill your travels for the next year or more, so play straight and don't buy the fakes on the street.
And if you think the Italians are excessive in their fines for knock-off products, the French fines go as high as $365,000 US for buying or selling fakes! Yowser!!
